Rascal Flatts' label closes- What does it mean?

An artist's label is like an athlete's agent. You don't really care who it is as long as they're on the field. In this sense, today's announcement that Lyric Street Records has closed won't mean much immediately. Rascal Flatts will still release new music, tour, and appear on late night TV. Other Lyric Street artists like Bucky Covington, Sarah Buxton, Tyler Dickerson and Love & Theft will also continue in their current directions. I suspect at some point an artist or two will be trimmed from the roster.

Disney was Lyric Street's parent company, and all of these artists are now Disney artists. Again, this doesn't mean much in the short term. I get nervous after that. Disney is based in Burbank. Do you think Bucky Covington feels comfortable cruising Hollywood Blvd? They do things differently away from Music City. Different manners, different ideas on touring and what is and isn't a good country song.

When your label is the only major country label in America not based in Nashville, it's an obstacle. It's like trying to win over a girl three towns over. You gotta' be pretty smooth to get her to look past the local boys.

I promise you Jay, Joe Don and Gary aren't celebrating tonight. Soon, they'll put this behind them and focus on bringing a kick-butt show to Raleigh, NC on June 25. And it will be great. Rumor has it they'll be rehearsing for the tour kick off in Raleigh as well. Stay tuned to QDR for more details on that.
