(as seen in the Independent Weekly April 7)
Sometimes we lose sight of how difficult it is to reach Garthian levels of success in country music.
An artist may have a hit or three, or maybe even put out a handful of albums before fading, and we think of him or her as a failure. I try to judge a musician's career like an athlete's. If someone can perform at the highest level for three to five years, that's admirable. Ten years? That could be Hall of Fame material. We also might consider not everyone wants to be a superstar. It's exhausting and you're robbed of a personal life (i.e. Kenny Chesney). The live show is a good litmus test of who an artist truly is, and Josh Thompson has a good one.
Check him out on Thursday at City Limits Saloon.
