QDR's Lisa McKay interviewed Carrie Underwood this afternoon. After any interview, especially one with a superstar like Carrie, we'll chat about it. Was a good interview? Did anything funny or strange happen? Carrie is a decent interview... definitely better than she used to be.
American Idol doesn't teach contestants things like how to work the stage at a concert or how to be an engaging interview. I first saw Carrie live four years ago, and she did her best but it was clear she wasn't comfortable in front of 20,000 fans. Now she owns it.
Confidence is key during interviews, and anyone thrown into mainstream media after growing up quietly in Oklahoma just won't have it immediately. Someone who's comfortable will give fun, unique answers to questions he or she has no doubt heard 50 times. A star like Brad Paisley realizes a funny story he told to a station in St. Louis is still brand new to QDR in Raleigh. Practice, practice, practice...
Carrie is figuring this out. You can tell she's at peace with her life and career. I suspect Mike Fisher is a part of this, which makes you want to root for them. I don't know that she'll ever be as entertaining as say Dolly Parton. That's just not Carrie's style. But she certainly has a great personality that comes out when she's paired with the right partner. We see it every year at the CMA's when she co hosts with Brad.
Of course good interview subjects can be part of bad interviews. Half to three quarters of the responsibility falls on the interviewer. That's a post for another day.
