Why Taylor Swift was the right Choice for Entertainer of the Year

Wynonna sounded off on the issue… millions of Kenny Chesney fans were no doubt upset about the choice… and listeners have been calling since Wednesday night at 11:01 pm to talk about how a 19 year old could win “Entertainer of the Year.”

The argument is that Taylor hasn’t been around long enough, and other stars like Kenny Chesney and (my favorite) Brad Paisley have paid their dues. For the first time in years, voters ignored the resume and picked the person who truly had the biggest 12 months in country music.

Imagine Taylor Swift were as a baseball player instead of a country music singer. Last season, she bats .350, hits 55 home runs, and drives in 150 runs. That is an MVP year. No one says, “Yeah, but she only hit .240 last year,” or, “Yeah, but so-and-so has been around for much longer and has never won the award.” The performance over the season dictates who takes home the hardware.
Taylor sold more CD’s than anyone else, sold out most of her concerts in minutes, and was just the second country star ever to host SNL (yes, this happened after the votes were in, but she made television history elsewhere too). That is a country music Triple Crown, and the reason she deserved to win on Wednesday night.
