Congratulations to Chris Young

His song "Gettin' You Home" is the Number 1 song on the country music charts this week. This means more American country radio stations played this song last week, than any other country song. Normally I say, "Whoop-de-do." Wal-Mart sells more clothing than anyone else, but does this mean it's the best clothing store around? No, it just means they're familiar, and easy to find. The same can often be said about the most played country songs.

I find Number 1's to be an overrated achievement from a fan and DJ point of view. To an artist though, it's a nice trophy. It's like an all star selection. There are less than 52 songs that reach this status each year (many songs remain at #1 for multiple weeks) and sometimes truly great songs reach #1. "Gettin You Home" is one of those songs, and Chris Young deserves it.

It's been a long road for Chris, and he's released a number of great songs to radio that haven't been very successful. I'm sure he wondered at times if he was going to be fired from his record label, but they recognized his talent and continued to promote his music. If he's able to string together hits over the next decade, we could be including his name on the list of all time great male vocalists. Having gotten to know Chris, I can say there are few people as deserving.
