Every artist has a window of mainstream success. It’s a finite timeline in which their career will open and close. It may be 5 years, 10 years, or longer in the case of George Strait, Alan Jackson or Brooks & Dunn. The truth is B&D saw that window closing and realized it was time to try a new window. Their recent radio songs have struggled to climb radio charts like they once did, album sales had dipped significantly and empty seats were popping up at concerts. There is absolutely no shame in this… it will happen to Kenny, Keith and even George Strait one day. Appreciate what they did in the same way you would an all-star athlete.
I expect both to release solo albums before long and to pursue other interests. Kix has a radio program, a winery and is active in Nashville politics. Ronnie has a golden voice, and perhaps his solo project will lead us down a path he couldn’t follow as a duo. Brooks & Dunn used the cliché “call it a day” to describe the end of their 20-year union. Perhaps another cliché is also appropriate: “Tomorrow is another day.” Personally, I can’t wait for it to get here.
