The result's of last night's episode of 'American Idol' were predictable, although I can't claim to have called the outcome in advance. Forever remember this one important truth about the reality television show: it's not a contest to find America's best amateur singer. It's a contest to find a really good entertainer who America will love.
Few will argue Pia wasn't amongst the top three vocalists on the show. She was stunning, and we soared with her beautiful voice. Pia is graceful, sophisticated, elegant and gorgeous. She does have one weakness however, and it proved to be fatal.
Pia is everything we (the Idol voters) are not.
We are flawed. We have goofy grins and big hips. We have floppy ears and don't always know where to look when the eyes of America are upon us. In sports and entertainment we latch on to teams we can relate to. A vote for Scotty, Casey and most of the remaining contestants is a vote for the American dream.
The other lesson is voters can't be lulled to sleep by a streak of great performances. Votes don't carry over, so you need to keep dialing. I worried Scotty would find himself in the bottom three before long. I think the Pia shocker will ensure he gets to the Top 5 safely.
